Convenience reigns supreme these days and facilitating our daily tasks has never been easier. From apps that do the grocery shopping for you to meals that are delivered right to your doorstep, we live in a world abundant with services that make your to-do-list a little less hectic. An example of one of those services would be MyIcebox, a Houston-based meal-delivery service that deliver healthy chef-cooked, prepped meals to your home.

HOW IT WORKS:
I’ve never tried a service like this before so I will give you the run down. You start out by going the website at www.myicebox.com and navigating the menu. From what I can see, they offer 9 entrees and 10 sides that change. For my two entrees I chose the Turkey Herb Meatloaf and Ribeye Kabobs with Dijon Garlic Marinade. For the sides I opted for the Roasted Red Potatoes and Crispy Roasted Cauliflower With Curry Yogurt. I thought the potatoes would pair nicely with the meatloaf and the cauliflower with the ribeye!
Next, place the order and wait for your meals to arrive! You have the options for servings and number of meals. All orders for the next week must be received by noon (12:00pm) on the previous Wednesday.
I received an e-mail reminder about my order (THANK YOU) because a girl like me can always use reminders. Tuesday came around and I ran to my door in a jubilant manner because that’s the fun part of online shopping, the SUSPENSE, THE EXCITEMENT. Alas, there it was, my first-ever delivered meals ! I opened the package like a kid on Christmas, or like I still do on my birthday lol. It’s Houston, it’s so hot so I couldn’t help but to think that the meals had melted.
Hooray! The meals were individually packed in an insulated bag surrounded by ice bags, ahhh hence the MYICEBOX name, you guysss, so clever. Honestly, I love the name, it’s pretty cool.
The meals are individually wrapped, vacuum sealed with instructions AND nutrition labels (WINNING). The food is already prepped so no mess and no prepping is necessary. The turkey meatloaf and kabobs went right in the oven and I microwaved the sides.
The kabobs came with marinated ribeye, cherry tomatoes, onion, baby bella mushrooms and bacon. The bacon was a nice addition. I thought this was a great low-carb, high protein dinner and I paired it with the roasted cauliflower with raisins, toasted almonds, cilantro a curry yogurt sauce. The meat was tender and flavorful and the portion size was accommodating to my dietary needs. To give you an idea, one serving of the kabobs boasts 23g of protein and 4g of carbs.
While most meals can be made in 10 minutes or less, the turkey meatloaf needs to be in the oven for 45 minutes which was longer than I expected. Once baked, you add the packaged tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, and cook some more until the cheese is melted. I then served with the herbed potatoes and voilà! It isn’t unusual to expect lean turkey to be dry and bland. We’ve all messed up lean turkey before. Theirs was surprisingly moist and full of flavor. The tomato sauce jazzed it up a notch. Also, I’m a sucker for herbed potatoes and these were soft just how I like them.
I think this is a great service for busybodies or those who simply want more time to accomplish other things. All four dishes tasted great and did not compromise the taste for the health-factor. I like that this company is local and providing a healthy alternative to our city.
I don’t have other meal services to compare them to but I do want to point out some things that stood out to me and why you should consider them for your future meal needs:
